Some clients aren't sure what to expect during a massage or how to prepare for one. Here is some useful information that will answer many common questions.
Where Will My Massage or Bodywork Session Take Place?
Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort. If this is a Massage-On-The-Go service, the massage will take place in the area of your choice at your workplace in a massage chair. It is a good idea to find a quiet place that you can relax in during your chair massage.
Must I Be Completely Undressed? Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed or wearing just undergarments; however, it is entirely up to you what you want to wear. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly draped during the entire session. For some massage techniques it is easier and more effect to perform these unclothed, but can also be managed with clothing. The last thing you want to do is stress about being clothed or unclothed during your session. So whatever fits your comfort level also fits your practitioner! For Massage-On-The-Go services you will be fully clothed as massage services in a massage chair do not require you to be undressed at any time.
Will the Practitioner Be Present When I Disrobe?
The practitioner will leave the room while you undress to your comfort level. You can relax on the table, and cover yourself with the clean sheet that is provided for you. When you are ready your practitioner will enter the room and start your session.
Will I Be Covered During the Session?
YES, you will be properly draped at all times during your session. This will also keep you warm and comfortable during your session. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
What Parts of My Body Will Be Massaged?
You and the practitioner will discuss the desired outcome of your session. This will determine which parts of your body require massage. A typical full body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. You will not be touched on or near your genitals (male or female) or breasts (female).
What Will the Massage or Bodywork Feel Like?
Everyone is different and so are their needs, so what a massage feels like to one person can feel totally different to another. Basically it depends on the techniques used. As you relax and let go your body will feel whole and happy. Your stress and worries will start to melt away. Broad, flowing strokes will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. Depending on the techniques used during your massage oils or lotions may be used, which also helps to hydrate your skin. If you feel any discomfort PLEASE communicate with your practitioner immediatly so that the technique and pressure can be changed to your level of comfort. Your body will respond best to the benefits of massage when it is not resisting, and when you keep a regular treatment schedule that is weekly or biweekly. Therapeutic massage, when used occasionally, provides only temporary effects.
Are There Different Kinds of Massage and Bodywork?
There are numerous types of massage and bodywork. Your session will be personally created for your needs and desired outcome of your session.
How Long Will the Session Last? The average full-body massage or bodywork session lasts approximately one hour. A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, which still has many benefits and can accomidate a busy schedule. Many people prefer a 60-minute session for optimal relaxation. The session time basically depends on you as the client. During Massage-On-The-Go services, your session time can vary. It is a good idea to allow relaxation time prior to and after the session.
What Should I Do During the Massage or Bodywork Session?
Make yourself comfortable. The practitioner will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session. Many people just close their eyes and completely relax and even fall asleep. Others like to talk during their session. Everyone relaxes and lets go in their own personal way. It is your session so however you relax best is up to you!
How Will I Feel After the Massage or Bodywork Session? Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. It is very important that you honestly answer your practitioner's questions, and inform your practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking.
